Books

Many moons ago, when presenting a paper for her Judging Diploma, a written comment from Juliette's tutor read, "You ought to write a book". That was the impetus she needed to set the ball rolling. In the late 1980s she approached her first publisher, Pelham Books, part of the Penguin Group, since when she has never looked back.

Her first book, 'All About the Lhasa Apso' reached the shelves in 1990 and was well received. Since then she has written a total of five hard-back books about the Lhasa Apso, and one each about the Tibetan Mastiff, Tibetan Spaniel and Tibetan Terrier, these being the four most prominent Tibetan dog breeds.

About the Shih Tzu, their Sino-Tibetan cousin, she has written four, with two about the Chinese Shar Pei.

Juliette has written two canine encyclopaedias, the first of which, 'The Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds' sold hundreds of thousands of copies, initially in hard-back, followed by several editions in paperback.

Concerning showing dogs she has authored three titles, two of which are still in print, ‘Showing Dogs – An Exhibitor’s Guide’ (Swan-Hill 2007) and ‘Showing Your Dog' (Kennel Club Books 2004).

Sight Hounds have always been another great love of Juliette’s and there are two books covering several of these breeds, ‘Popular Sight Hounds’ (Popular Dogs 1992) and ‘Sight Hounds’ (Swan-Hill 2006). She has authored individual books about hound breeds concerning the Basenji, Deerhound, Elkhound, Finnish Spitz, Greyhound, Pharaoh Hound, and Whippet.

Other breed specific books authored under her own name are Bichon Frise, Bullmastiff, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, English Setter, English Springer Spaniel, German Spitz, Griffon Bruxellois, Japanese Chin, Lowchen, Maltese, Otterhound, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Pug, Pyrenean Mountain Dog and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.

For a few titles, publishers have requested that Juliette use a pseudonym, for which she decided to cherish the memory of her maternal grandmother, Emily Bates, under which name she has written the Cane Corso, Russian Black Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier.

The Illustrated Directory of Dogs is the largest book Juliette has authored, a veritable tome, published in 2007.     Above she is pictured doing a book signing at Crufts, and left the book is pictured with her tiny friend the late Khagendra, then the World's Smallest Man.

Several of the books you have just read about have not only English editions, but also US, Spanish, French, German and Russian versions.

Juliette also worked as part of an eminent team of four authors to compile Kennel Club Books' Breeders’ Best Series, available for sale primarily in the USA and Canada. This is a series of small paperback books, giving breed specific information about the most popular breeds.

Now living in Nepal, Juliette continues to write and is widening her horizons beyond the scope of the dog world. She has also begun compiling some EBooks, about which you can read more on the following page, 'EBooks'.
